Psychotherapy is a process of self discovery that begins with a conversation

What to Expect

Through the recounting and sharing of life experiences, a person may gradually come to understand themselves more fully as they explore and reflect upon the meaning and interpretations they have made of those experiences. It is human nature to come to conclusions about ourselves, others and even life itself based upon the events of our lives and the feelings we have about those events. The conclusions we come to at a time when we are feeling emotionally distraught or agitated, and those we arrived at as children can be distorted based on many factors, and can lead to false core beliefs that we adhere to and repeat until they become habitual and unconscious.

Psychotherapy as a Process

Within the unconscious mind, behaviors and reactions will be repeated yet remain outside of our awareness of their existence, causing pain and dissatisfaction, often leading to depression and anxiety.  Psychotherapy, as a process of self reflection, is a method to come to a greater understanding of these false core beliefs and to heal and dissolve them over time.  As we unravel and release these distortions, we relieve the pressure of our negative self talk and the suffering it causes.  This process naturally leads to more self confidence in our ability to cope with the events of our past and present lives, as well as new ways of approaching relationships and challenges we face.

The Role of a Therapist

The role of a therapist is to act as a guide in this process. By listening carefully and with compassion, the therapist is a witness to this process of self discovery and brings the added benefit of an objective perspective. By offering insights and alternatives to habitual patterns, a therapist can support the therapeutic process to be a safe and accepting experience.
